The outcomes of Dan Norris MP's Keynsham Kraft / Cadbury's takeover survey

The survey was launched on Wednesday 20 January 2010. Whilst it was primarily carried out through circulation of paper forms, these included simple text and email response mechanisms (as well as a post-back one) to help people give their opinions quickly and easily. In addition, telephone calls were made to Keynsham households, using the same questions to get further responses.

Responses:

1. Despite the Somerdale closure programme being under way, Kraft say they believe they could keep the factory open if they took over Cadbury's. How important would saving the factory be for future employment prospects for Keynsham people?

A Important for Keynsham 95.0 per cent
B Quite important for Keynsham 3.1 per cent
C Not important for Keynsham 1.8 per cent
D Don't know 0.2 per cent

2. Keynsham has proudly been making chocolate for over 70 years. How confident are you that in five years' time Keynsham will still have a working chocolate factory at Somerdale?

A Confident 6.9 per cent
B Fairly confident 16.1 per cent
C Not confident 72.5 per cent
D Don't know 4.6 per cent

3. The Kraft takeover would mean a UK company being owned by an American one. When shareholders decide on Kraft's bid, should the prospect of keeping Keynsham jobs at Somerdale be considered more or less important than whether the company goes into American ownership?

A Saving local jobs is more important than who owns Somerdale 86.5 per cent
B Somerdale should close, rather than allow Cadbury to be
owned by an American company
4.8 per cent
C Don't know 8.7 per cent

As of noon, 4 February 2010, 1,093 replies had been received from right across Keynsham -every street in the town has been covered in one way or another. Responses were made by text, email, paper survey returns and telephone calls made to residents in the following proportions:

  • 34 per cent of responses were made by email
  • 28 per cent by text
  • 25 per cent by returned paper survey
  • 13 per cent by telephone calls made
