I believe the Wansdyke constituents I am proud to represent, and who I am accountable to, have the right to know how much it costs to run my offices and to do my job as a hard-working MP. This should not be surprising, coming from someone who is a long-standing Freedom of Information campaigner and who is strongly opposed to unnecessary secrecy.

Since becoming an MP I have not changed my view about being as open as reasonably possible. For example, I was the only MP of any political party in the whole of the West Country (and one of just 25 out of all the UK's 646 MPs) who voted for Freedom of Information laws to apply to MPs' allowances at the crucial Third Reading vote on this key issue on 18 May 2007.

I understand I am also the first West Country MP to make detailed information publicly available - well before MPs are forced to do so in autumn 2008 under the Labour government's Freedom of Information laws. Find out more here
