and Gifts
MPs are entitled to claim for unlimited travel between their constituency and Westminster, and a mileage allowance. Dan Norris travels by train, as well as by car, and where possible pre-books standard class rail tickets to reduce costs. Dan's travel costs totalled £8,534 for 2006/2007. Dan made no MP travel abroad claims. MPs do not have to declare visits to international organisations, NATO, Inter-Parliamentary Union or Select Committee visits or on government business. In 2006 Dan Norris represented the UK government for six days in the USA relating to a Home Office assessment of Megan's Law in the USA. Dan has professional expertise in the area of child protection having trained as a child protection officer with the NSPCC. Dan Norris has received one declarable gift as a result of travelling abroad since first becoming the MP for Wansdyke in 1997. He was given a solid gold wristwatch by the then Amir of the Arab Kingdom of Bahrain during a visit in 1998. This watch was donated free by Dan to Kidscape. This children's charity auctioned the watch raising several thousand pounds towards their important work in combating bullying and child abuse. Other MPs on this delegation were also given such watches. Not all gave these gifts away to benefit deserving causes. |
