Chancellor's visit
to Keynsham and Radstock launches push for every vote in ultra-marginal
North East Somerset
Chancellor
Alistair Darling met hundreds of voters in Keynsham and Radstock on a
major campaign visit to support Dan Norris in ultra-marginal North East
Somerset's Labour versus
Conservative two-horse race.
Dan has been knocking on doors every morning, afternoon and evening throughout
the campaign. And the Chancellor spent a few hours with him for two of
these canvassing sessions, on Bank Holiday Monday, in Westfield (Radstock)
in the morning and Keynsham in the afternoon.
In between, Mr Darling paid a visit to the busy White Gates Nurseries
garden centre in Keynsham for a public Question and Answer session. He
was joined there by local actor Tony Head, whose numerous film and TV
roles include playing the Prime Minister in Little Britain.
Speaking at the garden centre meeting, Alistair Darling said: "Dan
is a first rate MP. It's very close here and a few votes will decide it
either way. One thing is abundantly clear: either local man Dan Norris
or Tory candidate Jacob-Rees Mogg will be the MP come Friday morning."
Dan Norris said: "Alistair was very keen to come to support my campaign,
underlining how extremely close it is here between me and the controversial
Tory candidate. Every vote will make a difference, none more so than the
votes of people minded to support the Lib Dems. It is they who will decide
the outcome of the election here.
"Objective and impartial sources including the BBC are indicating
the Lib Dem vote last time
was far too small for any 'surge' in their support to make a difference,
and indeed could result in Mr Rees-Mogg sneaking in.
"Senior Liberal Democrat Lembit Opik has urged those thinking of
voting Lib Dem in North East Somerset to think twice and vote for me as
the only candidate who can defeat Mr Rees-Mogg, and as someone has worked
hard for the local community."
Speaking to the Western Daily Press (Saturday 1 May) Opik said:
"Dan is a terrific bloke and a great MP and I am quite sure that
the people of North East Somerset would be better having him as their
MP than Tory candidate Jacob Rees-Mogg
.. tactical voting to keep
the Tory out is the right thing to do and perfectly understandable and
reasonable."
