Carers' Week 2009

Dan Norris MP celebrates Carers' Week 2008Six million people across the UK provide unpaid care for a loved one who is ill, frail or disabled.

Many thousands of North East Somerset carers do a wonderful job. Nonetheless it can be all too easy to overlook this vital role - even though most of us will spend some time as a carer.

Carers sacrifice huge amounts of time on their duties. But time is not all they forfeit. There can be a huge impact on their own health, finances and social life. And however much you love the person you're caring for, the emotional and physical demands can be extremely stressful.

So national events such as Carers' Week - which kicked off on Monday and runs through until Sunday - provide an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of carers' needs, and highlight the services and support available.

Radstock-based charity The Care Network does a great job supporting and advising many local carers. They can be reached on 01761 431388. If you're caring for someone it is important to know that help is available, that you don't have to struggle on alone.

You can find information about The Care Network here, and more about Carers' Week here
