Crime in North East Somerset is falling

The global downturn has hit hard here and overseas, yet many readers will be surprised by our area’s crime figures. You’d expect worsening law and order in a recession. But here in the North East Somerset’s police district the very latest figures show total crime actually continues to fall. It’s down 6.7 per cent in the past year. House burglaries and vehicle crime have been cut too.

Working to combat crime and anti-social behaviour in North East Somerset: Dan Norris MPGovernment investment in crime-fighting has been key. And our district force continues to lead the field – the highest crime detection rates in Avon and Somerset by a long chalk.

These encouraging figures may feel unfamiliar. They don’t make major headlines. But that doesn’t make them less real or valuable. Behind all these statistics are true-life experiences: Fewer victims of crime. Criminals brought to book. Crimes solved.

Of course if you’ve been a victim, figures like these don’t make it any easier to handle. Local police chiefs rightly acknowledge there is absolutely no room for complacency.

But it should be reassuring for all of us North East Somerset residents to know we have first-class officers and police community support officers in our neighbourhood police teams. We can be proud of them, and thankful too.
