A tribute to much-loved local songwriter and performer, Fred Wedlock

Many will have been deeply saddened to hear of the death of Fred Wedlock. Fred was that rarity - a truly talented person. A terrific songwriter and performer - and gloriously funny.

I had the honour of visiting him at his Timsbury home about two weeks ago. He had been suffering from pneumonia and appeared to be on the road to recovery. While tired, he was his usual self, explaining that he wasn't a hypochondriac no matter what his gynaecologist said.

This was so very Fred - despite the circumstances, his sharp wit was always there. And behind it all was a humanity and deep respect for, and interest in, others.

Fred had a special gift - the ability to be totally at ease with himself and with others. He made everyone feel comfortable be they commoners or kings. He genuinely liked people, and in return people liked him - a lot.

But the best part of Fred was hidden from the public gaze - his utter love and devotion to his wonderful wife, Sue, and his two daughters and the rest of his family. Wherever he now is, he will miss them more than anything else.
