New window poster helps Lib Dem supporters show they are backing Dan in North East Somerset’s two-horse race

A new and unusual window poster has been produced to help residents who would usually support the Liberal Democrats to show that in ultra-marginal North East Somerset they will be voting for Labour’s Dan Norris in the extremely close Labour-Tory two-horse race on 6 May.

The vivid yellow and red diamond poster (right) says; “Liberal Democrat supporting Dan Norris to win for North East Somerset.”

Dan Norris said: “Having spoken to a great many people who have told me they will be voting for me in this extremely close two-horse race, despite usually being Lib Dem supporters, I hit upon the idea of letting them show their support for the Liberal Democrats and Nick Clegg by displaying this poster in their window. It indicates clearly they are Lib Dems but are voting for me, Dan Norris, to win this election.

“Everywhere I go I am being asked, 'How do we make sure that the controversial Tory candidate Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg doesn't win?'

“The answer is to vote Labour, because here in ultra-marginal North East Somerset Labour is the strongest party. But for some people the water has been muddied slightly after Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg gained a surge of support after the first leaders' debate two weeks ago. There are many who felt he came across as the 'change candidate', and eclipsed David Cameron.

“The thing is though, here in North East Somerset the Liberal Democrats are a long way behind Labour and the Tories.

“The figures from the BBC which take into account the constituency boundary changes and are clearly impartial and objective back this up: Labour and Tory tied on 39 per cent, the Lib Dems way behind on 20 per cent.

“Whilst the Lib Dems appear poised to win in their nearby target seats such as Bath and Somerton & Frome, it really would be impossible for the Lib Dems to win here in North East Somerset. The Lib Dems know this, which is why it is not on their target seat list. In fact, it’s nowhere near being on their target seat list.

“The bookies rarely get these things wrong. And whilst their odds for this constituency have the Tories and Labour close together with short odds, the Lib Dems are clearly the long shots. Despite their leader's national poll rating surge, here they remain rank outsiders, with odds ranging from 12 – 1 to 33 -1.

“Yet it is so close between myself and Mr Rees-Mogg that it would only take a few 'floating voters' to switch to the Liberal Democrats to allow the Tory candidate to squeak in as the new MP.

“He is the last thing the vast majority of people I have spoken to want to represent them in Parliament.”
