Paulton Rovers
and Keynsham Ladies in the national football spotlight
Who would have ever
guessed that the eyes of the football world would be focusing on North
East Somerset?
But an excellent victory
over Chippenham Town on Saturday, followed by a dream draw, sees Paulton
Rovers hosting Norwich
City in the FA Cup next weekend.
The Canaries are, of course, no strangers to the West Country, with numerous
visits to Bristol City down the years.
I recall watching them several times in the 1970s from the East End at
Ashton Gate.
As recently as the early 1990s Norwich were competing in Europe against
the likes of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. But now they face a really
tricky test: Andy Jones's team at Winterfield
Road. It's the match of a lifetime for Rovers' players and fans -
a major money-spinner for the club that won't harm Paulton's economy either.
The national football spotlight shines up the road too. Keynsham Ladies
have their biggest ever game this Sunday: a Womens
FA Cup Quarter Final against the mighty Arsenal Ladies, the undefeated
champions of Europe.
Both games promise excitement aplenty - real David and Goliath encounters.
Good luck to our local sides. And here's to the next round.
