Lays Drive, Keynsham to be resurfaced following MP's pressure A residential road in Keynsham is to be completely resurfaced following ongoing pressure from Labour MP Dan Norris. Commenting on a media statement issued by B&NES Conservatives (December 2009), pledging to resurface Lays Drive, Keynsham, North East Somerset's MP Dan Norris said: "Over the past 18 months or so, I have continued to make representations to B&NES, on behalf of residents, about the very poor state of many roads right across Keynsham and North East Somerset. "In Lays Drive, Keynsham, I arranged a special site meeting for residents in July 2008, which was attended by officers from B&NES Council. Many residents still recall the way Council staff appeared 'coincidentally' the day before the meeting, to make some emergency repairs. "Since then, whilst B&NES have remained stubborn in their refusal to take the necessary action in Lays Drive, residents' concerns have remained and so I have continued to make representations in a bid to get the Council to sort things out. "Following my continued representations to B&NES about the extremely poor state of this road, the Council has at last agreed to completely resurface the road in the next financial year. "Residents will welcome B&NES' latest U-turn in the face of continuing pressure. "On the face of it, the long-overdue decision represents a hard-fought victory for common sense and 'people power'. However, B&NES have previously made resurfacing promises to residents which they have not held. "So it remains vital for continuing pressure to be placed on the Council to deal with this very long-running issue. I have therefore written to the council's Chief Executive, welcoming the Council's U-turn and asking for a specific date when the resurfacing work will take place. "Regrettably, right across North East Somerset there are a number of other residential roads where similar problems persist and I am of course continuing to make representations to the Council to address these. "Residents will
be encouraged that this Council eventually buckles under pressure. It
is a real shame they refuse to be more co-operative, but we know how they
operate: pressure on B&NES tells, so as North East Somerset's MP I
shall carry on stepping up the pressure on this very poorly-run Council." |
