Low response to survey about town council reorganisation, but it still brought results

The numerous local surveys and consultations I organise are an important way to stay in close touch with my fellow North East Somerset residents’ views. So is my availability all year at twice-weekly surgeries, coffee mornings and other events.

My consultations help get results too. My urgent survey about Nat West Bank’s planned branch closure is an example. Radstock residents’ and businesses’ overwhelming response to it played a key part in successful efforts to force the bank’s change of heart.

A few weeks ago I held a public meeting, launching a new survey, for views about possible re-organisation of Norton Radstock Town council.

There’s never been such a low response rate to any survey I’ve run. True, a relatively small number of people are passionate about it, with strong views on both sides. But for most ordinary people who I’ve asked to take part, the issue is well down their priority list.

But it’s not been a wasted effort. It’s brought results. My meeting and survey has prompted B&NES to finally stop their stalling and start work on a long overdue review of our area’s parish and town councils - something they’ve been promising, but delaying, since last summer.
