Warmer home grants for Keynsham, Radstock, Midsomer Norton and across North East Somerset top £2 million landmark

Nearly 1,800 homes in Keynsham, Radstock, Midsomer Norton and across North East Somerset have become warmer and more energy-efficient thanks to Government ‘Warm Front’ grants whose total value has just passed the £2 million mark.

The key landmark figure for the Government scheme in North East Somerset, launched nine years ago, was reached this summer. Yet despite the very high number of residents to have so far benefited, the area’s MP Dan Norris is urging still more people to come forward and get help with measures that could cut their energy bills by as much as £600 a year.

Dan Norris MP and fellow campaigners at one of his regular Warm front and benefit entitlement events, July 2009Dan Norris said: “Since the Labour Government launched Warm Front, nearly 1,800 local homes have been made warmer and more energy-efficient. That means thousands of people living in Keynsham, Radstock, Midsomer Norton, Paulton, Timsbury, Peasedown St John, Saltford, the Chew Valley, and elsewhere across North East Somerset will be warmer this winter thanks to this excellent Government scheme.

“I know from my twice-weekly surgeries, coffee mornings and other regular events that many people find energy bills a heavy burden. The Government’s Winter Fuel Payments, for example, are helping ensure older people need to worry less about turning up the heating during cold snaps.

“But Warm Front helps people of all ages, delivering energy efficiency measures such as heating and insulation to low income families, and people with disabilities as well as pensioners. It can provide grants of up to £3,500 for gas installations and up to £6,000 for oil installations. North East Somerset families have also had other measures, such as loft and cavity wall insulation and draught-proofing, carried out thanks to Warm Front.

“After an exceptionally mild October, with colder temperatures expected very soon, I would urge people to come forward to find out if they too might be entitled to funding under the popular scheme. This is a good time to get the ball rolling.

“As well as benefiting from energy-efficiency measures, people who make enquiries about Warm Front can also get a free confidential benefit entitlement check.

“To qualify for the scheme people must either own their own home or live in privately rented accommodation, and should be in receipt of a qualifying benefit. To find out more people should make a free phone call to 0800 316 6014. For people who prefer to get their information from the internet, I’d ask them to go to the Warm Front website.”
