Tories try to erase embarrassing and outrageous past comments of candidate in key marginal, Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg The campaign of Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg to win the North East Somerset constituency for the Tories suffered a fresh blow today as it emerged the Conservative Party is so rattled and embarrassed by numerous comments he has made over the years, they are trying to SHUT DOWN a spoof website which makes them more easily available for voters to read. London-based banker Mr Rees-Mogg, the party's candidate in the ultra-marginal Labour-Tory North East Somerset constituency, has recently attracted ridicule from national media representatives because of the way he has apparently been hidden away from voters during the election campaign. Now it has emerged he is trying to close down a website which includes a range of on-the-record comments and cuttings reported by various national media over a period of a few years. It is understood the site www.jacobreesmogg.org.uk is the work of a Bath-based blogger. Dan Norris, Mr Rees-Mogg's Labour opponent, said: "When I first saw the site it looked like a scurrilous attempt to smear Mr Rees-Mogg, so outrageous were some of the comments attributed to him. But on closer scrutiny it turned out the ridiculous comments were not made-up. These were all the work of Mr Rees-Mogg himself. "It seems the Tories are so embarrassed by everything Mr Rees-Mogg has said in the past, they're now trying to erase his past. "Most ordinary people in North East Somerset will find this spoof site funny. Mr Rees-Mogg is providing humour every time he speaks but it would be no joke if he were to become an MP." The Bath
Chronicle newspaper today (16 April) published an article which confirms
the Tories are trying to get the site closed, along with new quotes from
Mr Rees-Mogg and his agent: Last week's Sunday Times featured a major article about a journalist's unsuccessful attempts to track down Mr Rees-Mogg during the election campaign, but people who do not easily take to humour would do well to avoid reading it as well as the website referred to above.
