Schools under threat in North East Somerset as excellent GCSE results are published This week saw the official publication of the latest GCSE results for schools across the country. A decade ago just 41 per cent of young people in our area left school with five good GCSEs including English and Maths. Now it's up to 60 per cent. I warmly congratulate all local students on their achievements in GCSE and other assessments - and their parents and carers on the vital role they've played in supporting their children's learning. And I thank every teacher, every classroom assistant, every member of school support staff, and every school Governor - from nursery to secondary, people have worked together to help young people achieve their potential. These results also highlight the benefits of huge Government investment in education, giving Headteachers more money than ever before to use as they wish. Outstanding new school buildings, resources and facilities too. I want our schools to continue to carry on improving. I want still more investment in education because nothing is more important than ensuring North East Somerset's young people fulfil their huge potential. That is why Labour is committed to give real terms funding increases to schools over the next three years. But there is a real threat. The Tories have instead prioritised an inheritance tax cut which will benefit the five wealthiest families in each constituency (with tax hikes for the rest of us) and are committed to IMMEDIATE cuts to school funding if they win the election. As we move towards the coming General Election, many words will be said and written about the future of our schools. On my website there is a short summary of what I see as the choice on education that faces people in North East Somerset in the months ahead. Please take a moment to read it by using this link.
