North East Somerset Community Champions Awards

Everyone knows someone in their community who really goes out of their way to help others, to make their quality of life that much better. It's all too easy for their good works to be taken for granted but the new Community Champions scheme gives residents an overdue opportunity to say a huge "thank-you" to our unsung local heroes - outstanding people who make a real difference and go the extra mile to help others.

A number of award winners will be selected over the months following the scheme's launch in April 2009, with some very special prizes being given to the award winners, and those who take the time to nominate them.

Nominees might include:

• Carers who put in hours of dedication to look after those around them
• One-in-a-Million neighbours who are always there to assist with shopping, to keep a watchful eye, or to help in times of difficulty or hardship
• Individuals who work tirelessly to make their area a better place
• Shopkeepers who benefit the local community by doing more than they have to
• Those who selflessly put themselves out for others time and again
• People who stand up for others, when they could have a quiet life
• Individuals who do a terrific job and show great pride - even when their tasks are hard or without glamour
• Those who bring dignity to others in difficult circumstances
• People who think of others more than themselves in what they do
• Individuals who lift and brighten the day of others
• Those who do things you would never expect that changes lives for the better

But it is entirely up to the public to nominate any outstanding individual of their choice.

Here are just some examples of recent winners of the new Award:

• 60 years' service to the North East Somerset Girl Guide movement recognised with 'Community Champion' award

The inspiration for the Community Champions awards comes from the people who make North East Somerset the very special place it is. Since becoming local MP - and throughout my life - I have seen how North East Somerset people make a real difference through their hard work, consideration for others, and determination to make their community a better place.

Community Champions are people who offer their time generously to give a helping hand to others, or who put much more into their work than just what they are paid for. They are not the celebrities or millionaires, but regular people who go above and beyond expectations to make a real difference to their community.

There are five ways to nominate a "Community Champion" to receive one of Dan's awards:
